What you are actually choosing between

A shared tour sells individual seats on a boat that runs a fixed route on a fixed schedule with eighty to a hundred and fifty other passengers. A private charter rents you the entire vessel and crew for the day.

The difference is not luxury. It is control — over the departure time, the route, the music, the pace, and who is standing next to you.

When a shared tour is the better choice

Genuinely, there are cases:

• You are two people. Two guests on a shared boat at $99 each is $198. The cheapest private charter is $1,050. Unless the privacy is the point of the day, the maths does not favour you.
• You want the crowd. Some people want a hundred-person party with a hype crew and a dance floor. A private boat with your six friends is a different, quieter thing.
• You are booking tomorrow with no plan. Shared boats have daily departures and last-minute seats. Private boats need a little more coordination.

Where the private option wins

This surprises people. Shared tours run $79 to $139 per person. Fourteen guests at $99 is $1,386. The entire Azure 35 — a 35 ft sailing catamaran, yours alone — is $1,050. You save money and get the boat to yourself.

On the things that make or break a day

• Departure time. Yours, not a boarding call at 9:00 sharp.
• The snorkelling stop. A private captain picks the calmest, clearest reef that morning. A shared boat runs the printed route regardless.
• The music. Bluetooth is handed to your group. On a shared boat it is the hype crew's playlist at the hype crew's volume.
• The pace. Stay longer at the beach club, leave earlier, add a stop. On a shared boat none of that is on the table.
• Who is on board. Family charters, company outings and wedding parties mostly book private for this reason alone.

On what is included

Read the shared-tour inclusions carefully. Open bar is often limited to certain hours or certain drinks; the buffet may be an upsell; snorkelling gear is sometimes rented on board.
